Ketamine:
Redefining Depression Treatment

Ketamine has been around since the early 1960s. It is an anesthesia medication that causes a dissociation between the brain's thalamus and limbic system. This means it makes patients feel detached from their pain and environment.

Research shows that low doses of ketamine have been shown to stimulate neuron growth in the brain in as quickly as one hour. Many scientists studying ketamine focus on the neurotransmitter glutamate, which plays an important role in neural activation. Ketamine works by triggering glutamate production and allowing the brain to form new pathways and neural connections. This improved communication between cells helps the brain to create positive thoughts  and behaviors in patients who struggle with depression.

FAQs

WHAT IS KETAMINE?

Ketamine is commonly known as an anesthesia drug used for general anesthesia and sedation. At higher doses, ketamine is also known as a recreational drug of abuse because of its hallucinogenic properties.

Research shows that low doses of ketamine produce rapid antidepressant effects alleviating symptoms in many patients in hours or days.

IS KETAMINE THERAPY SAFE? IS KETAMINE ADDICTIVE?

Ketamine therapy is safe. When given by a licensed, certified anesthesia provider, it is very safe. Before any medication is administered, a consultation and physical assessment are performed to be sure that patients are safe candidates for ketamine therapy.

Ketamine is not physically addictive. It can be potentially abusable but not in a therapeutic setting.

HOW MANY KETAMINE TREATMENTS WILL I NEED BEFORE I FEEL BETTER?

Research shows that ketamine infusions are most effective when administered in 6 sessions over an initial two-week period.  After this, patients will enter the maintenance phase. Maintenance infusions, also called "boosters," are performed on an as-needed basis depending on the symptoms of the individual patient.
